In 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields is a decided single mom in her mid-50s who's elevating her adolescent son, Jamie, at a second brimming with cultural change and insurrection. Dorothea enlists the assistance of two youthful girls – Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist residing as a boarder within the Fields' house and Julie, a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour – to assist with Jamie's upbringing.
