This movie relies on the life story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's (German: 4 February 1906 - 9 April 1945) and his battle in opposition to the Third Reich. Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian and anti-Nazi dissident who was a key founding member of the Confessing Church motion. Aside from his theological writings, Bonhoeffer was recognized for his staunch resistance to the Nazi dictatorship, together with vocal opposition to Hitler's genocidal persecution of the Jews. He was arrested in April 1943 by the Gestapo and imprisoned at Tegel jail for one and a half years. Later, he was transferred to Flossenbürg focus camp. Bonhoeffer was accused of being related to the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and was then shortly tried together with different accused plotters, together with former members of the Abwehr (the German Navy Intelligence Workplace). He was hanged on 9 April 1945, 4 weeks earlier than the give up of the Third Reich.
