After breaking apart along with her boyfriend, Lillian strikes in with married couple Julia and Don solely to overhear them arguing within the evening. The entrance door slams as Don strikes out, and the next days sees Lillian, egocentric and irresponsible, having to earn her preserve by cooking for Julia, a reclusive, distrustful author who not often emerges from her room. Although speaking largely by way of notes, the odd couple steadily forge a bond and assist each other to barter the foibles, phobias and obstacles which have lengthy hindered their happiness.
