Former P.O.W. Jack Calgrove strikes Heaven and Earth to be reunited along with his youngsters following the Civil Battle. After returning house, Jack discovers that his spouse has tragically died and his youngsters, presumed to be orphans, are heading deep into the West on a practice crossing enemy traces, with the intent of being positioned into new houses. Calgrove and one other soldier crew up with a troop of Native American sharpshooters and a freed slave as they attempt to cease the practice.
