Nude males in rubber fits, close-ups of erections, objects shoved in probably the most intimate of locations—these are pictures taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, identified by many as probably the most controversial photographer of the 20th century. Brazenly homosexual, Mapplethorpe took photos of male intercourse, nudity, and fetish to extremes that resulted in his work nonetheless being labelled by some as pornography masquerading as artwork. However much less talked about are the extra serene, but hanging portraits of flowers, sculptures, and completely framed human varieties which are equally pioneering and highly effective.
