After an outdated school pal gives him a job at an iron foundry, the upright and trustworthy Ishwar leaves a shanty city on the outskirts of Calcutta the place he lives with a gaggle of refugees from East Bengal. With plans to forge a strong dwelling for himself, sister Sita and Abhiram, an orphaned boy he gives a house to, Ishwar is accused of promoting out and deserting his folks.
