Skanda Puranam (from mythology) tells the story of Kanyakumari who threw into the ocean, the flowers and gem stones stored for her marriage with Shiva. It's stated to have colored the shores. When the final Maharaja of Travancore dynasty travelled by means of Kanyakumari, he was awed by the beautiful garland fabricated from Oleander flowers and known as it Manikkamalai - the ruby garland. Ever since, a household in Thovalai village of Kanyakumari has been weaving Maharaja's favorite garland each morning, to be despatched to his Palace temple. The dynasty ended way back and state borders have been marked in trendy India. But, the customized holding the 2 lands, in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, stays intact.
