The story revolves round Aniyan Thampuran (Mohanlal), a naive and harmless prince of an erstwhile royal household, and his family in a village of Kerala. His household is closely indebted by the wayward life-style of his elder brother Chettan Thampuran (Sukumaran). Chettan Thampuran's premature demise forces Aniyan to take accountability for the household. He loses his home and all properties to pay his brother's money owed and is led to monetary break. He realizes that his spouse (Parvathy) had an affair together with his good friend Balan and married him solely due to the poverty in her household. This realization devastates him additional and culminates in his suicide in a heart-breaking scene.
